The Nigerian Federal Government is set to launch a digital postcode system in June 2023 to improve mail delivery, enhance security responses and reduce internet scams, banditry and kidnapping.
The Postmaster General of the Federation and CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Adeyemi Adepoju, explained at a workshop that the system will benefit the Nigerian economy and reduce insecurity.
The digitisation of postcode services intends to provide effective health care delivery systems, sturdy revenue and tax collections, and distribution of utility bills.
Adepoju also stated that implementing the digital postcode technology would boost identity management services such as the issuance of driver licenses, the National Identity Management number, international passports and banking services.
To ensure that every part of the country is effectively captured, the digital postcode will leverage a systematic framework of alpha-numeric characters, such as postcode areas and postcode units.
