Ayo Makun, a popular Nigerian comedian and actor, recounted losing N500m ($1.2m) after opening a non-smoking nightclub business in a recent interview.
AY, as he is known, said he saw potential for success due to the audiences he could gather for his comedy shows at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos.
But AY’s wife suggested against a non-smoking club due to the smell of smoke that often clings to her hair and clothes. Ignoring her advice, AY launched the club and was shocked to discover empty chairs on Friday evenings.
He gradually realised that having a club that prohibited smoking was not conducive to business. AY advised business owners to listen to their partners’ opinions and make careful choices for their businesses.
AY is a comedian, actor, and filmmaker who has starred in films and TV shows, hosted his comedy show, AY Live, and produced and directed the films 30 Days in Atlanta and A Trip to Jamaica.
