Amidst the current chaos surrounding the circulation of the new naira notes throughout the country, Hon Alhassan Doguwa, a federal lawmaker from Kano state, has accused the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, of sabotage. He made this allegation on Monday, January 30th, during an appearance on Channels TV’s “Politics Today” program.

Hon Doguwa claimed that the decision to change the Naira was political and targeted at the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), and that Emefiele and the CBN did not consult the House of Representatives before implementing the new policy. He went on to say that President Muhammadu Buhari had been misinformed and misled in the build-up to the whole situation.

The 57-year-old Doguwa also downplayed the 10-day extension issued by the CBN for the Naira swap, claiming that it was acceptable to the standing committees and the House of Representatives. He added that the CBN, as the apex bank in the country, must always consult the standing committees of the House or the leadership of the National Assembly before implementing any new policy.

Hon Doguwa went on to say that taking this decision at this moment would be detrimental to the economy, security, and general election of the nation, and that he suspected ulterior motives in the whole situation.
