For the first time ever, a referee has shown a white card during the Sporting Lisbon and Benfica clash on Saturday.
This card, which is unusual to most football fans, was presented shortly before half-time of the women’s game in Portugal.
The referee displayed the card in the same way as a yellow or red card when someone on the bench in the dugout became unwell.
Medical staff from both teams quickly came to the aid of the person, and the referee then showed the white card, which was met with enthusiasm from the crowd.

Unlike yellow and red cards which are used to punish teams for breaking the rules, white cards are meant to recognize and reward clubs for fair play.
This new initiative is part of a series of changes in football, such as concussion substitutions and longer stoppage time. In the end, Benfica won the match 5-0.
