As the January 31, 2023 deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for depositing all old notes approaches, people in Kaduna State, especially business owners, have started to refuse old Naira notes for transactions.
It was discovered that some ATMs in Kaduna are still distributing the old notes, which goes against the CBN’s directive. This has caused a scarcity of new notes, making it hard for people to do business.
Alhaji Ibrahim Musa, a wholesaler of yam, has experienced a drop in customers due to their lack of access to new notes. Mrs Ruth Madaki, a businesswoman, has had to close her shop due to the same issue. Miss Rebecca James, a food vendor, has also been affected, with customers refusing to accept the old currency notes. She has difficulty buying the necessary quantities of foodstuff for resale.
